Class of 1950 - 1961 - 50 Year Reunion
On the morning of Tuesday 15 March, 2011, 32 of us accompanied by a few wives, met outside the High School.
Class mates from Australia, Canada, Italy, UK, USA, Cape, and other parts of SA arrived to celebrate this great re-union.
Some of us had met since finishing school, but by the time we had toured the Junior and High schools, it was as if “time had stood still“ and we were chatting as if we’d never been apart.
Thanks to headmasters and staff who made us feel totally home. The photos of our era lining the passages of both schools brought the memories flooding back and echoes of “do you remember” liberally dotted the conversations.
A really big thanks to Sandy, of the OLD BOYS' UNION office, for all her help with the organising of the events at the school.

Upon leaving the school, our programme continued as with:
-
A casual lunch at PEDDLARS ON THE BEND
-
Followed on evening of day 2 with a spitroast lamb on the field next to Brodie Room. What a magnificent occasion with old boys, wives and guests enjoying the celebrations under the stars. The invited guests included Doug and Juliet Brown, Doug Jooste (1950’s junior school), Alan Douglas, Ken Ball, Francois Nell, Peter Trebble (1960 rep), Peter Berry (1962 rep), Nic Koch , Simon Perkin, Geoff Olivier and Sandy Edwards.
-
Day 3 saw most of the contingent and wives moving on to Hermanus where Mike Swarbreck, who owns BALEENS Guest House, organised a fantastic evening braai.
-
Having slept over in Hermanus, day 4 kicked off after breakfast with a hike in Fernkloof, where we were hosted by an experienced guide who kept us enthralled with his incredible knowledge of the local flora and the history of the area. Then on to the Bitaung Cave restaurant for lunch and a final farewell .
Rob Bernstein, Colin Gooden, David Wanting, and Robin Douglas (organisers), received such positive feedback from the OB’s and wives about the totally informal format, that we hope to organize a similar event in 2016 !!!!
What a JOL !

"The First Team at Newlands" - SACS 1960 Matric Class Reunion
by Peter Trebble
During 2010, "The First Team At Newlands" - the 1960 Matric Class celebrated a 50 year reunion. The reunion was a resounding success with the celebrations taking place to coincide with the first High School Assembly and last Assembly of 2010.
50 Years ago, our group, were the first matriculants at SACS in Newlands.

Sincere thanks are extended to both the Old Boys Union, the High School and the Junior School for the courtesy and incredible assistance extended to us at the various events.
The much enjoyed programme included:
- Day 1: (January 2010) Attendance at the High School Assembly in January 2010 followed by breakfast at The Gardeners Cottage.
- Day 2: (December 2010) A year end cocktail party in the Brodie Room (SACS OLD BOYS PAVILION) attended by the year group, partners, School and Old Boys luminaries. Also present were past teachers who taught us - Alan Douglas, Dougie Jooste, Brian Heath, Doug Brown (who was the guest speaker) and Stanley Williams, the esteemed Janitor of our era - who rang the High School bell between speeches.
- John Maconachie 1959 and Colin Gooden / Rob Bernstein of 1961, who "sandwiched" our 1960 year were also present. Their attendance formed part of the "passing of the baton acknowledgment", which is a new tradition for SACS Old Boys 50 year reunions.
- Day 3: A visit to the last High School Assembly (preceded by us attending the Quadrangle Race, which is a fairly new SACS tradition that takes place on the last day of the school year).
- High School and Junior School tours which reinforced what good hands the school is in.
- Lunch at Forries after a hard morning's work!
- Day 4: A fabulous Saturday night Black Tie Stag dinner at the Alphen Hotel during which virtually every guy got up to speak. The key note speaker who did a great job, was Ralph Stern. Ralph's American accent fell on deaf ears quite early in his address and he gradually pleased the audience by pronouncing certain words with a more South African accent i.e. "Obama" became "Obaaama".
- Day 5: A final farewell picnic with partners, was held at Groot Constantia.

Many Old Boys and partners, who travelled from all over South Africa and from overseas were warmly welcomed by "the locals" and our commaradie reached new heights.
We intend to meet regularly in the future and the 'gees' that has bound us together so tightly in the past has strengthened even further, to make us an unbreakable group in the years to come.

Kenneth Marcus, Jimmy McQueen and I had the honour of being the Reunion Coordinators. Our services have been voted in for a repeat performance in 5 years time.
This "young group" (although the camera never lies) of SACS men had enormous fun...........

Our guest speaker is John de Gruchy `54 who was for many years Professor of

R320 from here.
Then a very special word of welcome to Sandy Edwards of the OBU office in
Newlands who has continued with the wonderful work of our legendry CEO
John Ince who sadly passed away two months ago and who had planned to be
here today. I will hand over to Nic Koch in a few minutes who will pay a short
tribute to John. Nic was a former Chairman of the OBU for many years and will
also say grace.

Bertie Chait, Louis Knoetze, Doug Brown, Peter Berry, Filly Chait, Juliet Brown, Sandy Edwards
Apologies were received from Brian Nuttall and Jim Nesbitt whose better-halves were unable to come due to health reasons and John Macconochie due to
business commitments.
Enjoy your visit to Hermanus and your meal here at The Classroom Restaurant
where Mr Warwick and his staff have prepared a scrumptious meal for us. Many
thanks indeed to OB Bertie Chait who has donated the wine.
Many thanks indeed to Robin Douglas who handled the financial side of the
organisation of the lunch.
Leo Benning (Co-organiser with Robin Douglas)
This was one of the most enjoyable lunches we have had in Hermanus, the tenth
one since 2002 (there were two that year) and the venue was excellent with
more than enough space available. Thirty–nine OB`s including their wives/partners were present.

Nic and Faith Koch
A special congratulation was extended to Nic and Faith Koch who were
celebrating their 47th wedding anniversary.

Class of '60 - 50 Year Reunion
by Peter Trebble
A team of Old Boys from the SACS 1960 Matric year, visited the High School and attended the first assembly of the year on 13 January 2010. This visit to the High School and thereafter to the Old Boys Union Pavilion "The Brodie Room" was arranged to kick off their 50th Reunion year. Following on the visit to The Brodie Room for tea and biscuits, a special breakfast was then enjoyed at The Gardener's Cottage (in the Montebello grounds adjoining the school).

Those that attended were:
Back row from left to right: - Brendon Wides, Gerald Green, Ralph Murinik, Peter Trebble, Jimmy Warner, Ian Bernhardi
Seated: - Kenneth Marcus, Richard Taylor (UK based), Jimmy McQueen, Guy Nicol, Chris Hutchings
The 1960 SACS Old Boys have enjoyed many formal reunions over the years. Additionally and quite remarkably, many of these Old Boys have kept in touch closely over the years, and still meet regularly for social get togethers in Cape Town - roughly 3 - 4 times per year at Cape Peninsula restaurants.
"The First Team at Newlands" as this Old Boys year group have called themselves, were the first matriculants at SACS in Newlands. John Ince (Executive Director of the SACS Old Boys Union) was in fact a teacher at the High School in that year - his first year of teaching.
The first assembly for that year was held on the De Villiers field as the school hall did not yet exist.....The year was known as "The Great Trek" - the move from Orange Street Cape Town to Newlands.

The final 1960 - 50 year reunion big bash will take place on the 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th December 2010 with a full contingent visiting the High School for the last assembly of this commemorative year being the focal point of a planned programme of events over the 4 days. A special visit for the cocktail party to be held at The Brodie Room is definitely on the agenda!
