Alan Dawson (’87) Sets New Record
by Michael Owen-Smith

Alan Dawson ended his limited overs career on a suitably high note by surpassing Eric Simons as the leading South African wickettaker of all time in this form of the game. Dawson's 5/46 in the MTN Domestic Championship semi final against the Dolphins gave him 184 career wickets. Simons held the previous mark at 182. Dawson brought down the curtain on his one-day career in the final against the Warriors at Newlands although he will still play for the Cape Cobras in the Pro20 competition at the end of the season.

Two SACS Rhodes Scholars at Oxford in 2006
by John Ince

This year there are two SACS Rhodes Scholars at Oxford. James Morrissey ('05 Scholar) has settled in well at New College, built th in the late 14 century, where he keeps massively busy - so busy that "time flies". James is actually studying in the Department of International Development, situated in Queen Elizabeth House and is reading for an M.Phil in Development Science.

James writes that, "...One just gets swept along in all the studying, seminars, plays, recitals, social events, sporting activities...". He is truly stimulated by the interaction with other students, and in lectures he finds himself learning next to some of the brightest young individuals from all over the world. His course comprises of 25 students from 15 different countries.

Salih Solomon (’04 Scholar),who is reading for an M.Sc in Global Health Science, is a resident at Oriel College. Part of his course programme is a 2 month international research placement in a developing country pursuing an area of public health. Salih was based in Thailand and worked out of Bangkok, looking into Tuberculosis and HIV in Thailand.

Salih, like James, is amazed by the diversity and collective energy exuded within the Rhodes community, which he finds pretty humbling.

After his first year at Oxford, Salih handed in his master's dissertation and has just heard that he has been accepted to pursue the D.Phil in Public Health, commencing on 2 October. He writes of "seminar fatigue" - a worrying phenomenon at Oxford. Although the array of activities offered are so wide and vast, from seminars to talks, that he has had to consciously stop himself from over indulging in too many talks and discussion groups.

Thank you both for your interesting news James and Salih! The OBU is justly proud to have you two as SACS scholastic representatives at so great an institution of learning. Enjoy the rest of your studies and please do keep us informed of your exciting experiences, as well as your achievements in study. Go Well!

Rhodes Scholar James Morrisey

Chris Botha ('94) Features on Radio
by John Ince

In March this year, 702 Talk Radio and 567 Cape Talk radio stations ran a general knowledge competition to find the "Brain of Joburg" and the "Brain of Cape Town", respectively.

The format involved two people each answering as many general knowledge questions as they could in one minute, with the winner staying on to face the next challenger.

Chris Botha ('94)

Two contestants went up against each other on air six times a day over 4 weeks. With the daily winners competing to decide the weekly winners, and eventually the "Brain of Cape Town" and the "Brain of Joburg".

In a show of force, SACS produced both the Brain of Cape Town (Chris Botha, 1994) and the Brain of Joburg (Quentin Espey, 1973).

Chris and Quentin were then pitched against each other in the final, broadcast simultaneously on both radio stations, for the title of "Brain of Brains". After a close-fought and tense battle, Chris was named the winner.

News from the Junior School - 2006
by S. Anderson

Our focus for the year, "Proudly SACS in 2006", set the tone and the pace for a year of some very proud achievements. Success ater success can sometimes breed arrogance, and as educators we constantly watch out for, and correct this kind of unacceptable attitude. I am pleased to report that many successful SACS boys and teams kept their humility in their moments of triumph throughout 2006. We do have very many dignified boys at the school and, we acknowledge and respect their high standards of behaviour. Many of them have over the years received the popular and prestigious "Gentleman of the Month" trophy.

People often view success through results or scores only. Fortunately, it can be measured in many other rewarding ways. Our website highlights the details of those proudly SACS activities, and I congratulate our "Web Master", Mr Charles Howell for capturing those magic moments so effectively. Please visit for all th e details and activities of the Junior School.

In my opinion, our greatest challenge and success this year was in dealing with, and coping with the ravages of February's Art room fire. 9 classrooms and 2 Art rooms had to be evacuated, and 12 teachers and 225 boys were rendered classless for a period of some 4 months! It was very disruptive, uncomfortable and inconvenient. However, the boys came to our assistance by being able to adapt and to continue working as though nothing had happened at all, when some of us were about to overdose on Rescue Remedy! My congratulations and thanks to the teachers for restoring order and putting out fires over that difficult time!

The staff room in 2007 will be quite different, with three experienced people leaving. It is with regret that we have to say farewell to some real SACS stalwarts and here I refer to Mrs Mary Knight, Mrs Wendy Valentine and Mrs Gabie Wolmarans who have all played such significant roles at the SAC. I thank them for their 110% commitment to the school They really are such dedicated people and true blue SACS loyalists!

Thanks to all those big SACS people for a great year, and especially to our teachers - multi-talented people, doing their very best in maintaining the highest academic standards. We are extremely grateful to them for upholding the name of teaching in a time of educational uncertainty in South Africa. We are ‘Proudly SACS’ of them all!

Stuart Anderson - Headmaster of SACS Junior School

Message from Sandy
by Sandy Edwards

Greetings to all SACS Old Boys

NB: Please note that the OBU email address has changed to sacs_obu@sacollege.org.za

I welcome John back into the OBU office after his short stay in hospital and wish him a speedy recovery!

Thanks to all the OB's who have supported John and I in our various functions throughout the year. It's most encouraging.

The OBU office was really a buzz this year, with many visiting OB's and literally thousands of emails - please keep it up. We enjoy receiving all your news.

Thanks to the 400 Old Boys who attended the OBU Annual Dinner in September - I am sure, you will all agree, probably the best ever let's make our centennial dinner in 2007 - even better!

The OBU winter games were very well supported - and there was much happiness and laughter in the Brodie Room after the games - thanks to all who were involved. Please note that the SACS OBU Annual Golf Day will take place on Friday 4 May at the Mowbray Golf Club. We will once again be looking for sponsors for tees, greens, prizes and 4 Balls - so if your company can help, please contact us in the OBU office.

Once again, I appeal to all Old Boys to please keep us updated with your change of address, email or telephone numbers.

I wish you all a very happy, healthy and safe festive season.

Take Care!
Warm Regards
Sandy

Spectumur Agendo Award 2006 : Derrick John Honery Wagenfeld

The Spectemur Agendo Award recognizes outstanding members of the SACS community. Recipients are primarily Old Boys, but staff and parents who have had a close association with the school can also be considered in exceptional cases. It is awarded to the person who through exceptional actions in life or performance in a particular field can be said to give noteworthy expression to the school motto Spectemur Agendo. The award entails the presentation of an engraved medallion accompanied by a framed citation.

Our recipient this year is Dr Derrick Wagenfeld. If you wouldn't mind standing Doctor while your citation is read and the Headmaster will then present you with your award.

Doctor Derrick Wagenfeld, it is with great pride that your Alma Mater, the South African College Schools, presents you with the Spectemur Agendo Award for your outstanding contribution to medicine.

Born in Postmasburg in the Northern Cape, you arrived at SACS in grade 9 as a boarder, fully immersing yourself in the programme the school had to offer. In your final year, you were made a Rosedale and School prefect, represented the 1st XI cricket, was awarded the Mathematics and Best Debater Cup and having just turned 16 years old, matriculated with a 1st Class Matric.

In 1969 you graduated from the University of Cape Town, M.B.Ch.B, and then decided to specialize in Ear Nose and Throat and Head and Neck surgery, training under professorial head Carel du Toit at the Tygerberg Hospital. In 1976 you were made a Fellow of the South African College of Surgeons and the following year were awarded the Master of Medicine Degree (Laryngology and Otology) from Stellenbosch University. In 1978 you were awarded a prestigious Research Fellowship at the University of Toronto in Canada.

In 1982, at the age of 35 you became the youngest occupant of an ENT chair, appointed as Professor and Chairman of the ENT department at Tygerberg Hospital, University of Stellenbosch, recognized as the top otology unit in the country. It was under your Professorship and leadership that Tygerberg was chosen as the academic hospital to introduce cochlear implant surgery into South Africa. This delicate and technically advanced medical intervention, which also requires a dedicated and experienced rehabilitation team, was pioneered by you and has profoundly changed the lives of countless children who are born deaf as well as the lives of adults who have hearing dysfunction.

You have also nurtured, guided and motivated hundreds of students to academic prominence and have trained many Cochlear Implant surgeons all over South Africa. Your warm, friendly and caring disposition, coupled with a wonderful sense of humour make you enormously popular with all of whom you come into contact, whether professionally or on the golf course.

In addition to your highly successful private practice, you are currently the President of the South African Society of Ear Nose and Throat and Head and Neck Surgery. You have published extensively in numerous Medical Journals as well as being guest editor of the South African Medical Association's Continuing Medical Education Journal.

Doctor Wagenfeld, your medical eminence throughout the world has seen you being invited as guest speaker to World Congresses in Istanbul, Sydney, Rome and Birmingham. As the 1st doctor to carry out a successful Cochlear Implant in South Africa, you have not only broadened the medical boundaries in our country but have brought new hope to many who have been unable to hear.

Tonight your alma mater is proud to honour you for your outstanding achievements in medicine. The South African College Schools proudly bestows upon you the "Spectemur Agendo" Award: "Let us be judged by our deeds".

High School Headmaster Ken Ball, Derrick Wagenfeld ('62), his wife Jane
and Matt Guiney (Dep Head)

SACS OBU 175 Appeal Update: YO - WOZUP?
by Steve McKenzie

Hopefully by now you are all aware that we are blazing a bit of a campaign trail, with the objective to raise R10 million. The campaign will be closed with the ringing of the school bell at the Old Boys Dinner in 2008. This gives us two years to achieve a fairly ambitious target – no pressure!! As I mentioned in my talks at both the Johannesburg and Cape Town dinners earlier this year, we all have the SACS brand indelibly tattooed to our being. Not only did we all benefit from a great education but by simply being associated with such a great brand we benefit on a daily basis. It is therefore imperative that we, the custodians of the brand, ensure that it continues to prosper. The education department’s need to redress the massive imbalances of the dark days has necessitated Model C schools to become pretty much self sufficient - hence the requirement for funds to ensure our school continues to be one of the top in the country.

The key areas for which we are raising funds include;

  1. Talent attraction and retention (staff as well as students)
  2. Projects of a capital nature
  3. Scholarships (sporting, academic and for students from previously disadvantaged backgrounds)

Steve McKenzie - Chairman of the SACS OBU 175 Appeal

In The Beginning
The campaign was kicked off with some of our older (well older than me at least!) members donating kindly to get the ball rolling. These included; Ben Rabinowitz, Trevor Fish, Drew Danford, Tony Pocock and Dr Wylie. We then had a fantastic gesture by Sean Day, who set us the 1 + 1 = 3 challenge. Sean has given us R1 million and challenged us to match this sum. He has stipulated that his donation must go to boys of excellence and from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. If we are successful then he will give us another R1 million. Nice one Sean! Drew Danford embraced this challenge whole heartedly, and has almost single handily rounded up troops who have almost reached halfway (R500, 000). GO YOU GOOD THING GO!!

OFFSHORE
Look out all you ‘Ex-Pats,’ we’ll be talking to you soon. The recent weakening of the rand has meant that your contributions will go even further. Ralph Sterne, Trevor Norwitz and Peter Berry are canvassing the troops in the US, David Ellis those in Australia, Bernard Emby in Malaysia and Ian Jones, Carl Snitcher and Spike Espey the UK. We are also hoping to have a few functions in a few of the regions next year to celebrate the OBU Centenary.

FUN STUFF
We had so many people comment on how great it is to get together at Old boys dinners and that wish there were more reasons to get together. So to prove that we’re not just asking you to dig deep (and how deep we are asking you to dig) for our cause, we’re going to be arranging a few SACS Old Boys get together where we can all let our hair down (for those of you have any left) and have a bit of fun. Some of the events we’re exploring include:

The SACS OBU Gambling evening – contributors welcome
A Whisky and Cigar tasting evening – no table dancers included (at least at the early stages)
A Wine tasting evening – Alan Mullins, would be so kind?
A day at the races – a chance to own a race or two and win back some of the money you may loose gambling

PS We still need assistance in arranging the above, and to help drive the campaign, so those willing and able, don’t be shy.

PPSS the OBU now has a credit card facility for those of you who didn’t know

That’s all from me. Look forward to talking to you again soon.

Best regards

Steve McKenzie
Campaign Chairman, SACS OBU 175 Appeal
