SACS the best Eight in South Africa!
by Robbyn Moir
December 2009
South African College School (SACS) once again showed they are a class above domestic opposition when they out performed the other South African school crews at the Old Mutual Schools Boat Race in Port Alfred earlier this month.

The SACS 1st eight have been on a winning run over the last twelve months. Their U19 crew have cleaned up at almost all national school rowing regattas. However last year they were beaten into second place at the annual schools boat race in Port Alfred. This 6.2KM race for the largest rowing boats (eight oarsmen and a Cox) is modeled on the famous Oxford and Cambridge Varsity Boat Race which is held on the Thames, London. This physically and mentally challenging format really sorts the men from the boys and is the pinnacle of schoolboy rowing.

SACS eager to better their second place of 2008 got off to a fantastic start making the A final being 13seconds faster than any of the other South African School crews competing. The other team to make the final was Abingdon School, a touring team from the UK. Abingdon are class crew, featuring international oarsmen and who only narrowly lost to Eton in the 2009 Henley regatta final.

It was with some trepidation then that SACS took on the best of the UK. In what was to be echoed further down the coast in George in the South Africa Sevens competition – South Africa took on England in a final. SACS took on an early lead but were, however, forced wide on a corner mid way through the race. Despite SACS frantically forcing their boat round the corner the Abingdon crew had achieved a lead that despite SACS best efforts, could not be caught up.
SACS can take great heart from their performance and can go into the second half of the rowing season knowing that they are once again South Africa’s best school crew.
