RUGBY MATCH REPORT: Bishops too good for SACS
In wet and muddy conditions Bishops proved too strong
and to skilful for their hosts SACS, winning 20-10. The
match was an entertaining affair, enjoyed by a large crowd,
with both teams trying to play attacking rugby in difficult
underfoot conditions.
Uncharacteristically Bishops began playing conservative
rugby and used cut-backs and crash balls to keep the ball
close to their big pack of forwards. Despite good rucking
and driving by their forwards the tactic didn't work and
they spent most of the first half camped down in their
own territory. Despite giving away territorial advantage
Bishops were first to score after a kick from inside their
own half. Bishops chased well and outflanked the SACS
cover for right-wing Michael Nel to score.
SACS were straight back into the Bishops half and managed
to put together some good phases of play. SACS were awarded
a penalty as Bishops infringed at a ruck and flyhalf Tim
Carr did the necessary. SACS were guilty of some errant
kicking in both halves and it was from one of these kicks
that Bishops scored their second try. A classic counter-attack
was finished, somewhat controversially, in the right-hand
corner by Bishops centre Adrian Kritzinger.
Bishops began to gain some of their renowned attacking
rhythm in the second half and attacked relentlessly with
star players Nic Koster and Adrian Kritzinger to the fore.
The SACS team led by the loose-trio of Zack Beukman, Siswe
Stemela and Sean Binedell showed wonderful commitment
and got through a mountain of work in defence.
Feeling confident Bishops No. 8 Nic Koster tapped a penalty
on the SACS 10 metre line and tried to move the ball wide.
A pass went to ground and was scooped up by SACS left-wing
Dean Holland. Holland, who has been in prolific try-scoring
form all season, raced clear, chipped ahead and scored.
Tim Carr converted to bring the scores level and give
all the SACS supporters who braved the cold some hope.
Unfortunately for them Bishops struck straight back.
SACS had a chance to clear their lines from the kick-off
but attempted a chip kick instead. Bishops secured the
kick and again moved the ball wide to the right for classy
centre Adrian Kritzinger to score his second.
Not long after Bishops made the game safe, as Holland
was a tad over adventurous in running the ball back from
his own goal line. The idea was admirable but in the wettest
part of the pitch he was always going to be struggling.
Holland was tackled and turned-over and the ball was taken
wide quickly for Bishops left-wing Mathew Turner to score.
SACS attacked with all they had in the final stages and
created some good opportunities but poor finishing let
them and their supporters down.

RUGBY MATCH REPORT: SACS battle to beat
HTS Bellville
In a match played in cold and blustery conditions SACS
managed to defeat their hosts HTS Bellville, 15-8. The
game was punctuated by penalties as both sides battled
to come to terms with the referee's interpretation of
the tackle ball.
SACS started well and were full value for their early
lead. Centre Liam Slatem chipped over the defence and
re-gathered before offloading to left-wing Dean Holland
to score. SACS continued to apply good pressure and used
well-weighted grubbers and chips to good effect. The kicks
created a couple of good chances and if they had finished
them off SACS could have had the game wrapped up in the
first half.
Instead they conceded a soft try when an errant pass
was scooped up by HTS Bellville flyhalf Joline van den
Berg, who ran 50 metres to score.
SACS then got on the wrong side of the referee and conceded
seven unanswered penalties in the latter stages of the
first half. HTS Bellville centre Rowan Minords converted
one to give HTS Bellville a slender 8-7 lead at the interval.
Both teams made too many mistakes and conceded too many
penalties in the second half for the game to really get
going.
SACS flyhalf Tim Carr converted a penalty midway through
the second half to secure SACS the lead. Carr had two
other opportunities to make the match secure for SACS
but missed both. HTS Bellville were unable to create any
good scoring opportunities.
Playing with the wind SACS began to kick for field position
late in the half and were able to score from a line-out
drive. Livewire No.8 Sean Binedell, the man-of-the-match,
scoring a well deserved try. SACS finished strongly and
drove another line-out over the line only for the ball
to spill forward inches from the surface.
The SACS 1st XV have now won four games in a row and
can look forward to the visit of Bishops on Saturday with
confidence.

RUGBY MATCH REPORT: SACS beat rivals
Rondebosch
In an exciting match played out in front of a sizable
crowd, SACS overcame near neighbours and rivals Rondebosch
Boys' High in a hard fought match, winning 22-14. Despite
the heavy overnight rain the surface was good and the
teams were able to entertain the crowd with some expansive
rugby.
SACS started badly and were guilty of numerous basic
errors. After conceding a scrum from a skew throw to a
line-out on the own 22m-line, Rondebosch punished SACS
with an early score. A well executed cut move in the backs
saw outside centre Zubayr Abrahams come through at pace.
He breached the first line of defence and offloaded to
flank Matthew Hitchens who scored. Flyhalf Dean Grant
converted.
Despite the errors, SACS managed to pull three points
back via a long-range penalty from flyhalf Tim Carr. Not
long after Carr was guilty of holding on too long with
an overlap, and SACS missed out on a definite scoring
opportunity. SACS did take the lead though soon after
when an errant pass from Rondebosch flyhalf was seized
upon by SACS centre Liam Slatem. The ball was moved wide
quickly to left-wing Dean Holland who beat two defenders
and streaked in from 50 metres out for a brilliant score.
SACS made two elementary errors from the kick-off and
turned the ball over. In much the same way as SACS had
scored, Rondebosch shifted the ball left and their flyer,
Shaafik Nordien, waltzed over out wide. Grant was on target
again and Rondebosch led 14-8 at the break.
With both teams desperate for the win, they continued
to battle manfully in front of their vociferous supporters.
The SACS pack though began to take control of the scrums
and loose-forwards Zack Beukman and Sean Binedell stood
out with their energetic and abrasive displays in the
loose. The SACS backs rewarded their forwards' efforts
with a well-executed try midway through the second half.
Centres Ishmat Fakier and Liam Slatem combining beautifully
for Slatem to score. Carr converted for a slender 15-14
lead.
It was from another error by the Rondebosch backs that
SACS sealed the win. Rondebosch chasing a score for the
win attempted an elaborate run-around move. The ball went
to ground and was kicked ahead by Slatem who had the pace
to outstrip the cover. Carr was on target with the conversion.
With minutes remaining SACS closed out the game to the
delight of their supporters.

RUGBY MATCH REPORT: SACS just pip Stellenberg
On a hot Wednesday afternoon out in Durbanville SACS
held on to beat their hosts Stellenberg 21-20. The first
half was a scrappy affair with both teams guilty of numerous
basic errors. Consequently neither team was able to impose
its pattern on the game.
Stellenberg played with the light breeze in the first
half and looked to use their big pack to batter SACS into
submission. They took the three points on offer from an
early penalty with fullback Eben Basson converting from
30 metres out.
Both teams had their chances to attack off first-phase
and tur-over ball but neither was able to hold onto the
ball for long enough to score. For SACS left-wing Dean
Holland tried manfully to create some scoring opportunities
for his team while livewire Stellenberg flank Andreo Janse
van Rensburg continually asked questions of the SACS defence.
On the stroke of half-time SACS attacked down the blindside
only to see an errant pass intercepted by Stellenberg
centre Jonathan Phillips. Phillips ran 65 metres to score.
Basson missed the conversion and Stellenberg led 8-nil
at the break.
SACS, with the breeze at their backs in the second half,
needed to score early and did so via a well-worked penalty
move. A quick tap was well handled by the forwards before
lock Adam Norman eventually crashed over. Flyhalf Tim
Carr converted.
Crucially SACS botched the kick-off, placing themselves
under immediate pressure. SACS tried to clear their lines
but the kick was skewed into midfield. Stellenberg inside
centre Jonathan Hall fielded the kick and ran around to
score virtually unopposed.
SACS struck back soon after. The loose-forwards and backs
combining well to break out of their own half. SACS skipper
Zack Beukman was prominent in the move. He popped up in
the backline and carried the ball well into opposition
territory. Adam Norman was on hand to take the play closer
to the Stellenberg line where Beukman picked up from the
ensuing ruck and went over. Carr again did the necessary
and SACS were 14-15 behind with 15 minutes to play.
Both teams were desperate to win and the final quarter
was frantic with play moving regularly from end to end.
SACS went into the lead 21-15 when their nippy centre
Liam Slatem broke through and scored. With Stellenberg
still within seven point range the finale was always going
to be very dramatic. Stellenberg centre Jonathan Hall
scored his second try with minutes remaining it remained
for Basson to convert for the win. He was unsuccessful
and SACS held on for a hard-fought and much-needed win.

Boland Landbou vs. SA College High
School (SACS)
MATCH RESULT: Boland Landbou 8 (5) SACS 0
In wet conditions Boland Landbous heavier pack
laid the platform for an unconvincing win against visitors
SACS. The teams were evenly matched in most facets of
play but Landbous superior pack kept SACS on the
backfoot.
Boland Landbou had the stiff breeze at their backs in
the first half a dominated territory and possession. SACS
had one very good scoring opportunity when the hit the
blindside and worked an overlap. Left-wing Dean Holland
getting close to scoring in the corner. SACS were guilty
of kicking some good ball away while poor handling cost
Boland Landbou on many occasions. Boland Landbous
try came from a lineout drive, the looseforwards combining
well and breaking clear before offloading to hooker and
captain CG Stouman to score. Pieter Esterhuyse missed
the conversion from out wide.
SACS needed to score early in the second half and got
close twice. Livewire centre Liam Slatem making two telling
half-breaks but unable to link up his support players.
Boland Landbous game plan was obvious and they played
for field position for their powerhouse pack. Continued
pressure close the SACS line saw them close to scoring
on a few occasions but they had to settle for a solitary
three points in the second half. SACS had another good
scoring chance late on as great hands from fullback Warwick
Denman put winger Chace Kruger clear but the cover defence
closed him down.
It was an entertaining game in which both teams tried
to play attractive rugby in slippery conditions. The Boland
Landbou pack had the edge up front and as is so often
the case this proved telling. SACS never received enough
front football for their exciting backs.

Try: CG Stouman
Penalty: Pieter Esterhuyse
