SACS too good for Wynberg
from Rugby365 on 25th June 2007 by Graeme Wepener

The match began slowly with the teams feeling each other out. SACS played with the wind at their backs in the first half and were first on the scoreboard via a Tim Carr penalty. Wynberg struck back soon after through Angelo McKaiser before Carr again put SACS in front.

Camping down in Wynberg territory SACS secured a five-metre scrum. They moved the ball wide but a pass went awry. Outside centre Aaron Jacobs turned and picked the ball up and in so doing ducked under his opposite number. He cut through and could have scored himself but unselfishly passed inside to fullback Rodney Mthi. Carr converted to put SACS 13-3 ahead.

The wind meant SACS were easily able to play for field position and they extended their lead to 19-3 via two more penalties. That would have been about the lead they were hoping for at the interval but Wynberg scored via a charge-down to make it 19-8 and anybody's game,. Wynberg flyhalf Christo Terblanche getting in the way of a Chad Moolman grubber and going over for a moral-boosting score on the stroke of half-time.

Wynberg must have backed their chances with the wind at their backs in the second half but SACS played intelligent rugby. Kicking well and controlling possession SACS dominated territory even with the wind in their faces. Although SACS were unable to add to their score in the second half, Wynberg never looked like scoring until it was too late. Wynberg hardly got their hands on the ball and when they did they didn't use it well. They kicked poorly and their backs had very little penetration.

For SACS loose-forwards Dugald Robertson and Adam Norman were again immense. Burly hooker Robbie Herring continues to mature as a player and his line-outs were excellent in trying conditions. Rodney Mthi was his usual sparkling self on counter-attack while inside centre Chad Moolman kept the ball in front of his forwards with some storming runs in the second half.

Wynberg eventually managed to get down in the SACS 22-metre area at the death and put together a sustained period of attack. SACS defended brilliantly for a few minutes before Wynberg eventually forced an overlap on the right-hand side. Right-wing Mark-Andrew Sabatta waltzing over unopposed in the corner. It was too little too late though and SACS held on until the final whistle.

This was an important away win for SACS as Wynberg have been a bogey team for the last couple of seasons. SACS head off to Cape Schools Week in East London brimming with confidence.

Scorers:

For Wynberg
Tries: Christo Terblanche, Mark-Andrew Sabatta
Pen: Angelo McKaiser

For SACS
Try: Rodney Mthi
Con: Tim Carr
Pens: Carr 3

SACS record historic win over Paul Roos
from Rugby365 on 18 June 2007

What a game! What a win, and a well-deserved one too for SACS! The SACS faithful had waited twenty-six long years for this. On what turned out to be a magnificent winter's day in Newlands the 1st XV of 2007 set about making history by beating Paul Roos 20-12.

The win was secured in the first half as SACS built up what proved to be an unassailable 17-point cushion. Paul Roos were coming off two heavy defeats and SACS needed to get on top early, and this they did. They turned Paul Roos over out wide and swung the ball left. Quick hands by the backs put Dean Holland in the clear. Holland has not been in the prolific form of 2006 thus far this season but he chose the right game to regain his magic touch. The swerve and fend that saw him score 16 tries last season were back and he finished in fine style, Tim Carr doing the necessary.

SACS came straight back at Paul Roos and put together another period of sustained pressure, which culminated in a penalty goal for Carr. At ten points up the hosts were beginning to believe while at the other end Paul Roos were guilty of poor finishing. Clean line-breaks by centre Stephan de Villiers and lock Jaco van Vuuren were botched. The first when SACS skipper Zack Beukman tracked back and made a great cover tackle, the other when a low inside pass was dropped.

Having got out of jail SACS came back with a vengeance and scored again before the interval. A chip kick from centre Chad Moolman was gathered on the full by flank Dugald Robertson, who went over unopposed from fifteen metres out. Carr again slotted the difficult conversion and SACS were in dreamland as the half-time whistle sounded.

SACS were playing really well and had the better of the early exchanges in the second-half. Despite the poor underfoot conditions, as a result of the heavy rains during the week, SACS were willing the play their running game and moved the ball wide at every opportunity. SACS were pressing when an intercept by right-wing Thythan Adams saw him race ninety metres to score. Flyhalf Willie le Roux converted.

With points on the board Paul Roos noticeably gained belief and began playing with a lot more pride and passion. Throwing the ball around and bringing their big ball-carriers into the game they scored again after a long period of phase play. Centre Danie Poolman crashing over from a tapped penalty five metres from the SACS line.

Needing a converted try to win Paul Roos began running the ball from everywhere and it was almost inevitable that they would concede points. Instead of playing for field position they pushed the passes in their own 22-metre area and conceded a penalty for not releasing the ball on the ground. With time running out and a chance to all but seal the win, SACS skipper Zack Beukman had no hesitation pointing at the posts. Tim Carr was the hero as he calmly slotted the penalty to put SACS out of range.

The final whistle was greeted with emotional and joyous scenes as the whole school swamped the field to sing the SACS school song and chant the war-cry.

Scorers:

For SACS
Tries: Dean Holland, Dugald Robertson
Cons: Tim Carr 2
Pens: Carr 2

For Paul Roos
Tries: Tythan Adams, Danie Poolman
Con: Willie le Roux

Summer Sports Summary - 1st Term 2007
by Peter Kirsten

The 1st term of 2007 has produced excellent results both teamwise and individually displaying pride in performance. Each sporting code has “spread the name and swelled the fame”.

Our Oarsmen ( 1st Eight ) won the Selborne Sprint for the first time at the Selborne and Buffalo Regatta, with Nicholas Loydell (U15A) winning both Sculls events. The SACS team also performed with distinction at the River Vaal Regatta, placed a credible 3rd behind St John’s and Jeppe.

Water Polo continues to thrive at SACS, the 1st team defending their KES Festival title courageously before falling to a strong St John’s College in the final. The Mazinter Cup was once again passionately retained at a splendid Newlands Pool evening, SACS overcoming old foe Rondebosch in the final. Encouraging also was the appearance of our U14A’s and U15A’s in their age group finals

Basketball results under the guidance of Mr Barry Van Selm have reached new levels, the 1st team, U16A’s and U14A’s produced good growth winning 90% of their matches. Four boys have been invited to the WP U17 trials.

Tennis has witnessed the emergence of two WP representatives, our first in five years, namely Richard Fawcett (U15) and Michael Bolding (U18). Mr Cromhout deserves credit for his perseverance in this popular sport.

Sailing has produced a gem in Matthew Whitehead who won the Cape Point Challenge long distance endurance race. A brilliant achievement for such a young man (grade 8).

Athletics, as always, is a popular sport during the first term. The Paarl, Schools Champs and Triangular Meetings were all thoroughly enjoyable and SACS boys can be proud of their achievements, especially Lee-Roy Thomas, Brendan Lombard, Mark Kokoropo, Jason Goadsby, Michael de Kwaadsteniet and Kyle Ackermann.

Swimming saw Sebastian Rousseau excelling as a WP U19 participant at the Junior Nationals and other Meetings, while Alex Dovale (WPU19) and Digby Webb also produced some great swims.

Cricket: The 1stXI has excelled this term, winning 15 of their 16 matches (94%), culminating in eight of our boys gaining invitations to the WP U17 and U19 trials. They have played as a Team, each contributing at important periods with Carson Lederle bowling with authority, finishing 4th on the National bowling rankings. The U14A’s under Mr Karl Bresler have also shone, remaining unbeaten. Mr Bresler’s input will be sorely missed when he returns to Durban next term.

WP Lifesaving Nipper Team: Jason Wicht (U14) has been selected to represent this team at the Inter Provincials in Port Elizabeth during the holidays.

Thank you to all coaches, Mr Schultz and ground staff for your considerable efforts and congratulations to all SACS boys on and off the sports field for the manner in which you have conducted yourselves.

Peter Kirsten

Sports Director
